Everyone has a vice, and it can get in the way of real change when it comes to a healthier lifestyle. It’s important to identify your roadblocks, because if you don’t work to change those things… any progress will be temporary.
At Innovative Vitality, our providers meet with you frequently – weekly for the beginning of our program – to get to know you. We ask you to text your blood sugar monitoring results daily, so we can track your progress and get to know your habits. It’s through this dialogue that we get to know your vices, and together we work on a plan.
Once you’ve identified your vice, follow these steps to modify your behavior.
By journaling, you can make a plan and set your intentions around addressing your roadblock. For example, if alcohol is your vice, make a decision to limit your weeknight drinking and allow yourself to drink on the weekends.
While abandoning something cold turkey may work for some, it often isn’t lasting. To create real behavioral change, start small. Gradually cut back the habit you want to change to make its role in your life less significant over time.
Are there situations that make you more likely to engage in the behavior or habit you are trying to limit? Be thoughtful about those situations, and come up with alternatives like going for a walk, canceling plans or an alternative (such as non-alcoholic drink).
It’s OK to slip up, but don’t let it derail your entire plan. And be sure to celebrate your efforts when they do work! It’s worthwhile to take the time to change the things that get in the way of your success. You’ll be glad you did.
